The Mazda MX-5 is one of the most iconic sports cars in the automotive industry. It was a true game-changer when it hit the market in 1989, and it remains so today, 24 years and 3 generations later.

Mazda has been introducing new models for some time now, and it is believed that the MX-5 will soon get a refresh. After all, the 4th generation arrived on the market in 2015. Even though the current model is still up-to-date, a bit of novelty never hurts.

Escaping the salt in the sauce?

I have driven each of the 4 generations of the Mazda MX-5/Miata, and I can tell you that it was love at first sight each time. It\'s a car that ages as gracefully as a fine wine. I have had just as much fun behind the wheel of a 1989 model as I did with a 2023 model. That\'s why I am not at all worried about what lies ahead for this little Japanese sports car.

Mazda has reportedly revealed to certain media outlets that the next generation of MX-5 will be electrified. However, \"electrified\" doesn\'t necessarily mean 100% electric. Unfortunately, it seems that the Japanese manufacturer has not disclosed further details, leaving room for speculation.

With models like the MX-30 EV and the CX-90 PHEV, Mazda has dabbled in almost every realm of automotive electrification. Hence, anything is possible regarding the next generation MX-5. Nevertheless, I strongly believe that the manufacturer will opt for a plug-in hybrid powertrain, and here\'s why.

Firstly, Mazda has proven that it can offer fuel efficiency similar to that of the majority of hybrid vehicles, thanks to its SKYACTIV technologies. That\'s why I believe a conventional hybrid powertrain can almost be ruled out.

Currently, the only 100% electric model Mazda offers is the MX-30. With its below-average range and unique concept, this model is intended for a very niche clientele. In my opinion, the Japanese manufacturer simply isn\'t ready to fully embrace electric powertrains for its most popular models.

All of this leads us to the most logical option, which is a plug-in hybrid powertrain. This type of technology is becoming increasingly popular in sports cars as it enhances performance while providing better fuel economy.

In any case, we eagerly await the next generation of the MX-5. Rumors suggest it will be unveiled in 2025.
