Even though the CX-50 bears the Mazda logo, this Japanese automaker's SUV could—and arguably should—be part of a lineup of elite models, much like Acura with Honda or Lexus with Toyota. Since Mazda doesn't have a luxury sub-brand, some of its vehicles serve as the brand's more prestigious offerings, as is the case with the CX-50. It features an elegant and refined silhouette. Its cabin is plush, and the level of craftsmanship reflects a high attention to detail. Not to mention its dynamic driving experience. This SUV has everything to appeal to buyers.

The big news this year is the addition of a hybrid version, which strengthens the CX-50's powertrain lineup. That was about the only thing missing from the model to make it nearly perfect, but we'll focus on the gas-powered version here since we've already covered the hybrid in another article.

Trim Levels and Pricing

In its standard configuration, the Mazda CX-50 starts at $39,950, which is very competitive for such a luxurious and well-appointed vehicle, even in its entry-level trim. For that price, the GS-L trim offers premium features including 17-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, and a 10.25-inch infotainment screen. The next step up is the GT trim at $45,350. This price increase comes with upgraded equipment, including 20-inch wheels, a 360-degree camera system, and more. Then comes the GT Turbo, which adds $2,500 and essentially gives you access to the turbocharged engine. Finally, the Meridian trim sits at the top of the range with a starting price of $50,350. This isn't just a luxury version—it also offers enhanced off-road capabilities.

Category and Competition

Even though the CX-5 remains the most popular model in Mazda's lineup, the CX-50 gains market share every year. It's a vehicle that confidently holds its own against the competition. Its value for money is impressive. Add to that a robust and eloquent design, solid and dynamic driving manners, and a premium brand image that definitely appeals to buyers. The CX-50 is one of the few vehicles in its segment that truly allows you to escape while still meeting your practical needs.

Rivals: Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Bronco Sport, Ford Escape, GMC Terrain, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Compass, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-5, Mitsubishi Outlander, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, Toyota RAV4, Volkswagen Tiguan

Design and Technology

The 2025 Mazda CX-50 exudes a premium presence with plenty of character, giving it a strong road presence. The Meridian trim showcases its adventurous spirit and genuine off-road capabilities. Mazda made excellent choices in wheel designs and color options for the model.

Inside, the CX-50 offers a harmonious blend of comfort, refinement, and versatility. A 10.25-inch infotainment screen is standard even on the base trim, which is rare in this segment. The 2025 CX-50 also features wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Driver-assistance technologies are effective without being intrusive.

Performance

Excluding the hybrid, the 2025 Mazda CX-50 offers two gas engine options. The standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine produces 187 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque, which is more than sufficient for most drivers. It comes paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive is standard. The turbocharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine generates up to 256 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque when using premium fuel.

Weak Points

The only real critique for the 2025 CX-50 is that Mazda still uses its older 6-speed automatic transmission. However, this is more of a journalist's quibble than an actual problem.

Strong Points

This is a brilliant vehicle across the board. The CX-50 turns heads, offers an impressive level of equipment, and delivers a driving experience closer to a luxury vehicle than a mainstream SUV.

Signature Element

The 2025 Mazda CX-50 is truly a luxury and prestige SUV offered at a price point accessible to most buyers.

Final Word

The 2025 Mazda CX-50 delivers both a premium experience and serious off-road capabilities. It's a vehicle chosen as much for passion as for practicality—a rare combination in this segment.
